CC Licensing Options Endorsed by DSR4AI

DSR4AI's Mission and Vision

DSR4AI is committed to creating an open, free, and diverse dataset of Taiwanese culture to enhance AI's comprehension and application of Taiwan's unique heritage. By collecting local texts spanning various domains, eras, and subjects, we strive to compile a comprehensive "Taiwanese Cultural Textbook for AI" that preserves local knowledge and promotes the localized development of AI.

The Importance of CC Licenses

Creative Commons (CC) licenses offer a public copyright licensing framework that empowers creators to grant permissions for others to use their works under specific conditions while retaining certain rights. This approach challenges the traditional "all rights reserved" notion of copyright. CC licenses align seamlessly with DSR4AI's philosophy of fostering the widespread dissemination and sharing of knowledge and ideas.By embracing CC licenses, we can:
  1. Provide contributors with clarity regarding the scope and terms of their work's usage.
  2. Encourage open sharing and reuse of data, expediting knowledge dissemination.
  3. Offer legal and accessible data sources for AI training.
  4. Cultivate social collaboration and harness collective intelligence.

Prioritizing CC0: The Rationale

Among the array of CC license options, we prioritize CC0 (Public Domain Dedication). CC0 enables creators to dedicate their works entirely to the public domain, relinquishing all copyrights and related rights, including all associated database rights. This maximizes the freedom for others to utilize the work. Our recommendation of CC0 is rooted in the following considerations:
  1. CC0 offers the highest level of legal certainty and interoperability, streamlining AI training and application.
  2. CC0 contributes to the creation of a genuinely open and shared knowledge ecosystem.
  3. CC0 minimizes legal obstacles, empowering more individuals to freely use and innovate.

Additional Acceptable License Options

Beyond CC0, we also accept the following CC license options:
  1. CC BY (Attribution): Mandates users to attribute the original author when utilizing the work.
  2. CC BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike): Builds upon CC BY by requiring derivative works to be licensed under identical terms.
  3. CC BY-NC (Attribution-NonCommercial): Permits non-commercial use of the work by others while necessitating attribution to the original author.
We advise against using licenses with ND (NoDerivatives) or excessively complex CC license combinations, as they may restrict the dissemination and adaptation of works, hindering AI training and application.
